Does the FRITZ!Repeater transmit IPv6 data over VPN?
In operation as an internet router, the FRITZ!Repeater can establish VPN connections (IPSec, WireGuard) over both IPv4 and IPv6. This means that VPN connections can also be established if the FRITZ!Repeater is operated on an internet connection with Dual-Stack Lite (DS-Lite).
Whether IPv6 data are transmitted within the VPN tunnel depends on the VPN solution.
- With WireGuard, devices in the remote network can be accessed via IPv4 and IPv6. However, IPv6 internet access is possible only when the VPN server assigns the client global IPv6 addresses (Global Unicast) and routes the IPv6 traffic into the internet. FRITZ!Repeaters and many VPN servers and providers do not support this. In these cases no IPv6 internet access is possible via the VPN tunnel.
NoteWe want to make internet access via IPv6 possible via the remote FRITZ!Repeater in a future FRITZ!OS update.
- With IPSec, the FRITZ!Repeater can only transmit IPv4 data within the VPN tunnel. Via IPSec it is not possible to access IPv6 internet services or devices in the remote network that can only be reached via IPv6.
