Does the FRITZ!Box transmit IPv6 data over VPN?

The FRITZ!Box can establish VPN connections (IPSec, WireGuard) over both IPv4 and IPv6. This means that VPN connections can also be established if the FRITZ!Box is operated on an internet connection with Dual-Stack Lite (DS-Lite).

Whether IPv6 data are transmitted within the VPN tunnel depends on the VPN solution.

  • With WireGuard, devices in the remote network can be accessed via IPv4 and IPv6. However, IPv6 internet access is possible only when the VPN server assigns the client global IPv6 addresses (Global Unicast) and routes the IPv6 traffic into the internet. FRITZ!Boxes and many VPN servers and providers do not support this. In these cases no IPv6 internet access is possible via the VPN tunnel.

Note:WireGuard connections that were configured before FRITZ!OS 8 must be reconfigured in order to transmit IPv6 data over the VPN tunnel.

  • With IPSec, the FRITZ!Box can only transmit IPv4 data within the VPN tunnel. Via IPSec it is not possible to access IPv6 internet services or devices in the remote network that can only be reached via IPv6.
