Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a mobile network

With an additional mobile dongle, the FRITZ!Box can also establish the internet connection via the mobile network. Connect the mobile dongle to into the FRITZ!Box and select your mobile network provider in the user interface. If the SIM card is protected with a PIN, enter this as well. The complete FRITZ!Box range of functions for internet, telephony, and multimedia is then available to all of the devices in your home network without restriction.

Note:The FRITZ!Box can also connect to the internet via a mobile network router connected to it using a LAN cable. If the mobile network connection is only to become active when the regular internet connection fails, proceed as described in Configuring failover protection for the internet connection in the FRITZ!Box or – if it is to be used permanently – as described in Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with another router.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The mobile dongle must support the mobile standard 4G (LTE) or 3G (UMTS/HSPA).

Note:The 3G mobile network (UMTS/HSPA) has been switched off in Germany and many other countries.

  • The mobile dongle must support the AT command set or USB tethering.
  • IPv6 is only supported by mobile network dongles that support MBIM (Mobile Network Interface Model). Mobile network dongles that do not support MBIM can only be used on the FRITZ!Box if they obtain an IPv4 address from the mobile network operator.
  • Depending on the mobile network operator, functions for which a public IP address is required (for example incoming VPN connections) are either not available or only available to a limited extent.

Note:All instructions on configuration and settings given in this guide refer to the latest FRITZ!OS for the FRITZ!Box.
