Setting up the FRITZ!Box for use with a mobile network

With an additional mobile dongle, the FRITZ!Box can also establish the internet connection via the mobile network. Connect the mobile dongle to into the FRITZ!Box, select your mobile network provider in the user interface, and enter the PIN for the SIM card. The complete FRITZ!Box range of functions for internet, telephony, and multimedia is then available to all of the devices in your home network without restriction.

Requirements / Restrictions

  • The mobile dongle must support the mobile standard 4G (LTE) or 3G (UMTS/HSPA).

    Note:The 3G mobile network (UMTS/HSPA) has been switched off in Germany and many other countries.

  • The mobile dongle must support the AT command set or USB tethering.
  • The mobile dongle must obtain an IPv4 address from the mobile network operator. The mobile network dongle cannot be used if the mobile network dongle obtains an IPv6 address.
  • Depending on the mobile network operator, functions for which a public IP address is required (for example incoming VPN connections) are either not available or only available to a limited extent.

1 Connecting a mobile dongle to the FRITZ!Box

  1. With the SIM card inserted, connect the mobile dongle to a USB port on the FRITZ!Box.

    Important:According to the USB specifications, the energy consumption of a USB device may not exceed 500 mA. If the dongle requires more than this, use a USB hub with its own power supply (active USB hub) to connect it to the FRITZ!Box. Refer to the manufacturer for information on the dongle's energy consumption.

2 Configuring the internet connection in the FRITZ!Box

  1. Click on 'Internet' in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click on 'Mobile Network' in the 'Internet' menu. If the 'Mobile Network' menu is not displayed, follow the steps in our guide FRITZ!Box does not detect a mobile network dongle.
  3. If the mobile network should always be used for the internet connection, enable the 'Internet connection via mobile network enabled' option.
    • If the mobile network should be used for the internet connection when the internet connection fails, enable the option 'Expanded Failover Protection / Fallback Mode for Cable/WAN'.
  4. If the 'PIN' field is displayed, enter the PIN for the SIM card in the mobile dongle.

    Important:If you enter the wrong PIN three times, you must enter the PUK. Your mobile network operator can give you information on the PIN or PUK.

  5. If the 'mobile network operator' drop-down list is displayed, select your provider from the drop-down list. If your provider is not displayed, select 'Other operator' and enter the account information you received from your provider in the corresponding fields.

    Note:You cannot change the account information for preconfigured mobile network operators.

  6. Click on 'Apply' to save the settings.

3 Configuring the mobile dongle

The following steps are only necessary if a link to the user interface of the mobile dongle is displayed in the FRITZ!Box user interface under 'Internet > Mobile Network'.

  1. Click on 'Internet' in the FRITZ!Box user interface.
  2. Click on 'Mobile Network' in the 'Internet' menu.
  3. Click on the link to the user interface of the mobile dongle.

    Note:You can also use the mobile dongle's IP address to directly access its user interface, for example via http://192.168.10.20.

  4. Enable internet access in the mobile dongle by entering the PIN for the SIM card in the user interface of the mobile dongle. You can find information on configuring the mobile dongle in its manual, or consult its manufacturer directly.
  5. If you received account information for internet access from your mobile network operator, enter the account information in the mobile dongle.
